Diva Cup Care

Hey Steph,
I am hoping you can answer this email before i leave for Bali on March 4. I just got a diva cup and I love it. I know you use one, and I am hoping you can give me some advice for cleaning and sanitizing it while on the road. I’ll be in Bali for the month of March, so any advice would be great!

I’m also a vegan, who enjoys yoga and whitewater kayaking. Your blog is awesome and I love reading from a likeminded lady!
Thanks,
Annabell From Asheville, NC

Hi Annabell,
I have a Keeper cup, because I like the natural rubber–for some people with sensitivity, this would not be the best choice, and silicone is the other option. I know silicone is considered perfectly safe, being an inert material. But I’m always inherently dubious about anything made in a lab and I’m very leery of plastic in proximity to liquid in relation to my body. These types of concerns are highly up for debate with no clear answer, but that in itself is a red flag to me. I use plastic and plenty of man-made things, but I try hard to pay attention and to limit the ones I can. That being said, I don’t have the Diva cup it’s made of silicone, but I have no proof this is a health concern. Still, we all have our quirks, and mine is to try to steer away of man-made substances in my body as much as possible.

The directions that came with my Keeper say you can just empty it out and stick it back in while traveling. I’m sure that’s fine, but I can’t deal with that emotionally–I must have some water for rinsing when emptying and using throughout the day if I’m going to use the cup option (or night–this is where the cup really shines, by the way!). I also need to wash my hands both before and after the whole maneuver. So I need to have some water available if I’m going to use the cup. For more major cleaning of it when you’re somewhere you can do it, I just scrub it up with soap and warm water. You can also soak it in a very diluted mixture of vinegar and water, which you should be able to find anywhere. But for your month trip, just regular water rinsing with a more thorough soap/water rinse when possible should work fine for you.
Have a good time 🙂
Steph

Milton baby bottle sterilisation tablets are perfect for this.

I have a Diva Cup. The care Steph described for her Keeper is the same as Diva care. It’s incredibly easy to use and care for.

i boil mine a pot for about 20 min after each cycle. I find that it sterilizes it just fine.

Steph – I read that it helps to lessen cramps. Have you had that experience?

I’m not sure Amy, I don’t usually have a lot of cramps, so don’t have a real sense either way.

    Hey Steph,

I read this article on my way to the airport! Thanks so much for the information, it was certainly helpful while I was gone. I’m loving my cup and am so happy I bought one. Take care, and thoughts are with you right now.
