This seriously makes me want to jump from planes, but sadly I can’t afford another hobby, especially one as costly as this. Plus, I have found running and cycling compete with my climbing time enough as it is.

I hear you Caleb, it does get pretty busy with too many passions! But there are so many amazing things to do in this life….

…but jumping and flying is more marvellous than the others…Nooooo?

Myself and my girlfriend live in the UK and we are so interested in getting into skydiving, with a view to one day doing some wingsuit flying. However the uk is not the place to really do it. Is there somewhere you can recommend where we can go in the states and do a course and roughly how much the course costs. Many thanks for inspring us to follow you.

Steph, can you discuss these “line twists” in a little more depth, for us beginners?
As far as I could see, it looked like you get this often (meaning you handled it very well!). Is this a common thing when skydiving? Can this happen when BASE jumping?

It can happen a lot if you do some things wrong: deploying in a turn (as in this video), pulling your pilot too aggressively, or having your wings asymmetrical when you deploy. I’ve had it happen a few times skydiving, but that was the most dramatic instance, and luckily I had a camera on
I have had this happen once base jumping, also when I deployed too soon after a turn (that footage is in the Children of the Sky video)–also, was wearing my camera so I got the footage.

Thanks for the reply. I saw the line twist in the Children of the Sky vid. Scary stuff — great vid!
I guess what I’m trying to ask is what happens if you can’t fix it in time? I mean, when this happens when skydiving you obviously cut-away the main parachute and use the reserve (like in the vid). But when BASE Jumping, there is no reserve, so I imagine the outcome to be a little different!?

On a side note, would you ever consider setting up a section where you place a pin (like on Google Earth) at all your jump locations? I really like the one in Switzerland(?) where you followed that ridge down all the way to the town and had an absolutely Priceless smile on your face
How did you get up there? Hike or chopper? What peak/town was that?

What a cool idea!
That jump was off the Black Wall above the Kandersteg Valley. Unlike most sites in the area, there is no cable car at all, it’s a 3.5 hour walk up the mountain to the exit point, very beautiful hike.
With base jumping, there is no reserve, so whatever happens with your canopy is what you get.
