Crazy Beautiful Thing

Last winter I went climbing at the Cathedral in Saint George for the first time. When I got up to the cliff, I was amazed to see that there were a handful of people up there, and they were all old friends I hadn’t seen in a long time–crushing hard, of course. Mike Call is someone I’d been really hoping to do a project with for some time, and I mentioned to him that I had a video I’d really like to shoot. He immediately got it: that there was something I had to say, within the context of climbing and base jumping.

Within a month or two, prAna, Backcountry.com and Evolv had come on board to support the video, and Mike, Boone and Bailey Speed arrived in Moab to spend a few days with me on the Tombstone. The weather was stormy and difficult, like it likes to be when you have a schedule, but we managed to get one jump in and one day of climbing on the Tombstone. I knew that Mike, Boone and Bailey would be able to distill the spirit of what I wanted to say and what I wanted to share with this video when they took it all to the edit room, and they very much did.

    This is beautiful and inspiring. I love the way you sum up dedication and passion: “one run by itself is nothing, but running everyday becomes something.”

    Thank you for this, a crazy sport fills my life too and I often wonder how and why we face risk with joy.

    As you say dedication makes a little thing become somethingI never thought of it that way before. I believe that’s what built cathedrals and fought battles, inspires teachers and street sweepers.

    I never knew them but I suspect that Magellan and Mario would agree.

    Whatsoever
    thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might;
    for there is no work, nor
    device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave,
    whither thou goest.
