Update to this story: we finished the silent auction last night, and received many generous bids. Thank you immensely to everyone who shared this post and sent in an offer!! The final bid came in over the actual retail cost. The check is going directly to Layton, and I know he will really appreciate it. Thank you climbers!
One day I received an email:
Hi Steph
I got double set of technical friends most of them unused. all in perfect condition. they sit in a closet doing nothing.
Do you think you could put them to use?
I live in calgary alberta and don’t climb as often as I should ,bought way too much gear, working all the time.
no conditions ,whatsoever. Why I don’t try to sell it ? I don’t like to haggle with people, I’d rather give it away ( I feel better this way)
let me know if you are interested.
ps I got another new set of cams -this one I will keep for my easy climbing trips.
I sent him an email to ask if it would be okay to use this gear to raise money to help someone….
Hi. Steph
Just like I said before double set of tech
Friends (brand new condition)
Is yours. No conditions.
Do whatever You want with it.
Happy to contribute to good cause too.
If you want to I will send it to you..
Ps
Thanks for replying
I also enjoyed you book,
Thanks for inspirations.

You may remember that we did a big fundraiser to help Layton Kor, because he’s having a lot of health problems and Medicare deductible expenses are high. It was a great fundraiser, and helped a lot! But Layton’s still on dialysis, and still dealing with the medicare payments. He is in good spirits as he always is, but I can tell he is not always feeling the best. We talked on the phone for a while a couple of weeks ago, and he told me all about the lizards and snakes he’s been reading about, and asked me to do a base jump for him
We also talked about climbing, of course, and he reminisced about traveling around Europe to climb in the Dolomites, one of his favorite places, and mine too.
It was a totally random and generous gesture of this unknown climber to mail me a box of barely used Wild Country tech friends, a brand new Metolius gear sling,a brand new Arcteryx chalkbag, helium carabiner and nut tool! I checked out pricing of all these things, and it would cost $864.67 to buy this little box of goodies, even with the gear sling and chalkbag on sale right now at backcountry.com.
So my idea is this: let’s keep the good spirit going with this box of cams! I’m having a silent auction and I will send the proceeds to Layton. Send me an email at steph@highinfatuation.com with your offer. I’ll send out the cams whenever we reach the best bid that’s somewhat in the ballpark of its value.
The highest bidder will receive this whole box of stuff (which I am taking out for a spin at Indian Creek first, just for fun), a signed poster from me, and all the good karma this project has collected from start to finish–these cams will never fail you, that much I know. I can sign the #4 if you want too, because it’s silver and Sharpie will show up on it.
Thanks to all!
Steph
