How to Build a Super Space Efficient Climbing Wall

How to Build a Super Space Efficient Climbing Wall

My friend Ben lived in Moab for a season working as a skydiving tandem master. Now he’s working at a dropzone in the midwest, missing our climbing and base jumping adventures.
Never one to be daunted by adversity, he decided to build a climbing wall inside the 5th wheel trailer he is living in, and even included a materials list for all of you other folks out there who might need to build a climbing wall inside your…trailer? :)

Are there any other super space efficient climbing walls out there? Send us pictures!

Dear Steph (aka Dawn Patrol),
Since moving to the Midwest (Ottawa, IL), I have lost touch with so many wonderful things I experienced while living in Moab. All I see for miles is corn and soy farms. So I decided to build a bouldering wall. I needed a place to workout no matter if it was snowing, raining or heavy winds.
I asked my friend Justin who is an all around fixit man, carpenter, and pilot to help me out. My thoughts on what I wanted would have created a very poor looking wall. So we went to work measuring the inside of my 35 ft 5th wheel trailer. Oh, did I forget to mention the bouldering wall was going to be inside a trailer? Well yes I do believe that is a great idea too. So I ripped out all the unnecessary sofa’s tables chairs and useless stuff people like myself do not need. Then began the 4-week process of designing and building the wall. After the whole process was done I had someone come and make sure the trailer was level and reinforced the base of it.

Tools
-circular saw
-power screw driver
-measuring tape
-level
-a few good friends

Materials
-4 4x8x3/4inch Plywood
-8 4x6x8
-10 2x4x8 studs
-3 4x4x8
-2 boxes of wood screws 2inch and 3 inch
- Lots of random holds

Love, Ben

Such a cool idea! The black paint makes it look really good. Don’t forget the T-Nuts though.

it almost looks like it’s blackboard paint too, which is a REALLY good idea for making problems….

  • Jason

actually it is blackboard paint.  Easy to mark all the different routes
