Life & Loss

Hi Steph,
I have only just read of the death of your husband Mario and am truly sorry for your loss.

I have had several people close to me die including friends in the mountains so I have some knowledge of pain and loss. The feelings of loss and grief are terrible and they never really leave you but, over time, you learn to cope and you learn to live again.

I have always admired your accomplishments as both a climber and flyer – take care and I wish you happiness and peace.

Kindest regards
Ronan

Thank you Ronan, I appreciate your mail.
Steph

Hi Steph, I found your site while reading up about camping in the back of my truck. I lost my husband to a heart attack in 1999 and my world came to a screeching halt. I didn’t know that a muscle (the heart) could hurt so bad without killing me. But somehow, I lived through it.

I don’t know that the pain ever get’s less, I still miss him terribly 15 years later. I think what happens is that somehow, you learn to live with it and go on. But don’t ever let anyone tell you it’s time you get over it. It’s YOUR grief. Just a few weeks after my husbands sudden death, my Mother was telling me it was time to move on. And I HATED her for it.

You need to explore and get to know your grief in your own time and way. There is no time limit on grieving for a loved one. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Society used to respect the grieving period but now, as a whole, society is very uncomfortable with the grieving process and tends to try to hurry people up. Don’t let them do that to you. You take the time you need. Time will pass and like I said, I think you just learn to live with the pain.

Most of your friends and family will be there when you need them. All you have to do is reach out to them. Don’t isolate yourself. That’s the absolute worst thing you could do to yourself. Find ways to celebrate the love you and your husband had for each other. You will find that there are people out there who have already walked the path you are walking now and they can help you find your way.

I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. God bless you.
